Horray For Babies!

The baby fancy mice turned out to be two black eyed oranges (one satin), some broken blacks (one satin) and the palest black and tan I've ever seen. Very cute but as they are only pet-type animals they are rather small in the ear and eye. Soon to be rectified I hope...

The two satins were picked up yesterday by a very nice lady and her son who were after a couple of cute mice and are offering them a lovely home. I hope that they settle in well for you both!

The Sable Roan hamster (Squadge) has been mated again having not produced babies, she will be due in 10 days... ish.

I really must find where I wrote down that mate-date...

The Persian Jirds have been at it like its going out of fashion so fingers crossed for baby Jird-lets. Of all Jird species the Persians really stand out to me.

There are not many rodents that can be trusted not to gnaw a finger poked through bars. I thoroughly recommend them to pet keepers with a bit of space as they get immensely tame with minimal effort.

If I can find a camera and cable I will attempt to take pictures to add at a later date.

Time To Get Breeding Again...

There is currently minimal breeding going on, I have a litter of pet type fancy mice in the nest which are 100% satin carriers. They are black tans and broken black tans and there is a token black eyed orange thing... its only a matter of days old and as yet I'm not sure what it is...

My multimammate mice are expecting and the litters will consist of agoutis and red eyed cinnies in self and broken marked.

My sable roan syrian hamster has mated with my cream dominant spot and is expecting in three days time although if she is pregnant it is going to be a small litter.

Well, I did it... I finally got the new shelving up in Shed Land! It was enterntaining (to put it politely) as I was putting most of them up on my own. The shelves are up to eight foot in length and with all the best will in the world... I'm not...
But anyway. They are all up and have remained up for a good week so fingers crossed they will not decide to leap off the walls any time soon.
The new syrian hamsters (bred by Towy Vale Hamstery) have settled in nicely. There is a dark grey female who is possibly a tort, a cinnamon long haired female carrying dark grey, a female honey rex carrying dark grey and a smoke pearl male. The smoke pearl is a little small but he is lively and active and has endeared him self so well that he has earned himself a name: 'Cashew'.
Fingers crossed for dark grey babies in the future!
I managed to get some decent photos of the acacia rats last week and even managed to handle them both (shock horror!) without getting bitten. I am hoping to get hold of some nice females for them both some time this year.
I have was pottering around on the net a few weeks ago and discovered that there is a satin mutation of egyptian spiny mice! If any one in the UK has these could they please get in contact with me.
Appologies to any one that has recently emailed me and had no reply, we had been without an internet connection for some time and it maybe a while before we get one back (I am currently staying with my Fiances parents in wales).
If any one needs to contact me can they please post in the TVR forums and one of the members will pass on my phone number etc. Click Link to go straight there...

I've left it rather a long time between the last entry and this one so I expect I will have a lot to write about... humour me.

We'll, my pair of pure Winter Whites have done me proud producing another litter since October. I have put a Sapphire female and a nicely marked Merle male aside from the first litter and am hoping to get some nice Sapphire Merles out of them when they start breeding. The male is very chunky and of good type so I am hoping to get some good quality babies out of them.

I am regularly producing satin Campbells as my Argente female turned out to be a carrier. The satins are coming out in Argente, Normal (my first ever normal babies!) and Blue Beige. I had a stunning Opal baby appear in the nest recently to a satin Argente male and a rather pale Chocolate female. If I remember rightly this baby was a girl and so will be staying. My Black Eyed White Campbell still stubornly refuses to get pregnant but then I think that my male (a red eyed Lilac) may be firing blanks...

The Fancy Mice are producing nicely, the babies are coming out big and pretty and even after several litters neither of my does look anything other than fabulous! I have had a very interesting texel baby come out in a litter from my Argente female. It is a pale cream fox with a colour point nose. Its male but we shall see what he turns out like!

My Guenthers Vole babies are looking great, I will be keeping a male and a female to swell my colony but am now in a position to be able to offer some of these funny little rodents to other keepers. Please email me if you are interested and I will send you information on their husbandry. My adult pair did have another litter of ten in the nest but the female had an accident last week and managed to get herself stuck on the cable tie suspending her water bottle from the top of the tank and she lost all the babies. She is now fine and hasn't broken her leg as I feared so hopefully there will be some more babies on the way soon. I felt terrible when I found her as its not the sort of thing that I ever let happen in the breeding room. It wont happen again.

One of my Multimammate mice had a litter of 22 two days ago... this is the biggest Multi litter I have ever had! The female has littered on several occasions before and is experienced enough to cope with such a large number of babies so I am not worried

My Cavies finally had babies - three of them! The is a Lilac, a Lilac Golden and a Chocolate with a day-glo ginger nose. they are very cute and I have had a lot of interest in them. Here are pictures of them at less than a week old.

I evenually managed to aquire a couple of pairs of Chinese Hamsters which I am now attempting to keep on a colony basis. I would never have though this possible had not a good friend told me that he kept chinese in colonies for a long time with no hassel. So, I'm giving it a go and so far, so good.

My Dumbo rat pair are together and the female is looking rather pear shaped so fingers crosed for babies soon.

I mated two of my syrians this week and expect Tortoiseshells, Yellows, Yellow-Blacks, Blacks and possibly some Doves from each litter.

TVR did a 'Show and Tell' for Bourne End Fun Night on Friday and I would like to take this opportunity to formally thank Gemma Pickering for all her help. I could never have done it without her. We took along Egyptian Spiny Mice, Striped Grass Mice, Degus, Pallid Gerbils, Rats, Mice, Winter Whites and Syrians as well as Roborovski Hamsters and my pair of Harvest Mice. The harvest mice went down a storm as they are so small and active. People spent quite a while just watching them wander up and down their branches. Children were captivated by them and adults that know that they are an endangered species felt privalaged to see them so close too.

I am hoping to get some dark grey syrians in a couple of weeks and will hopefully breed a couple of lilacs out of them as well as dark greys.

Please feel free to leave a comment or two about this web log,

Kat

Fancy Mice: well, its been an interesting couple of weeks watching the naked mouse litter grow. Normally, you peer in at the nest expectantly every day, impatient to find out what colours you have in the litter when they fur up - it seems wierd watching the babies never quite leave the pinky phase, they are now nearly eyes open and are still completely bald!

despite the fact that baldies are notorious for not lactating sufficiently for a litter, the doe has had no issues at all. The babies are a good size for thier age and are growing well. There was a single runt in the litter but he disapeared after about five days of age.

The entire Texel litter have sold but I do have another litter due this week from a black and tan doe and a dove tan buck.

Syrians: I have a litter of syrians in the nest at the moment (born to a long haired satin silver grey female and a silver sable male. I was expecting homozygous and heterozygous silver greys out of this pairing but have got a real mixture!! At the moment im still unsure on colours but it wont be long before I will be able to tell what they are. Some of these will be staying and the rest are up for sale... do get in contact if you are interested.

The next mating will be a tortoiseshell x yellow black pairing which will produce torts, tort and whites, yellows and yellow blacks. The mating isn't planned for another two or three weeks

Rats: Things are quiet on the rat front at the moment as I dont have any babies however I do have a husky pairing planned and hopefully a dumbo pairing... if my male ever arrives!

Dwarf Hamsters: My pair of pure winter whites have recently had their first litter for me! The litter consists of three merles, two normals and a sapphire. I haven't checked sexes yet but will do so ASAP. I have a litter of campbells in the nest at the moment but they are all reserved. I have just put together a Satin argente x Argente pairing so should have satin carrier babies in the litter.

So... 'Shed Land' is rather busy at the moment... as am I keeping up with it all!
